VOICES ON THE INSIDE
The Voices On the Inside project was created as an intentional expression of the urgent need for understanding the humanity of incarcerated women in the face of a dehumanizing system.
Impact
VOICE.
In a society that often silences the voices of incarcerated women, it is crucial to listen and understand their experiences and perspectives. Their narratives hold immense value, challenging existing norms, breaking down barriers, and fostering equality. By engaging with their stories, we can broaden our perspectives and confront the societal injustices that persist today.
We must make a conscious effort to amplify these voices, providing platforms and listening without interruption or dismissal. Valuing their insights paves the way for a more inclusive, compassionate society where everyone is recognized for their humanity.
HOPE.
Poetic Justice participants in Oklahoma were initially not given permission to have their portrait photos taken. Instead, they created self-portraiture artwork ranging from self-portrait drawings, hand-made crafts, acrylic paintings, mixed media creations, and more.
POWER TO CHANGE.
The Voices on the Inside exhibit is a multimodal art installation that engages visitors via poetry, photography, and audio in conversations around mass incarceration, gender-based violence, poverty, addiction, and mental illness. The multimodal experience seeks to center humanity and expression, and is free to the public.
